And because the bed is raised, there is far less bending and reaching. This version comes complete with a professional-grade liner included, which protects the timber, helps retain moisture in the compost and keeps soil where it belongs.

• 2" x 2" corner posts supporting every corner

• Flat-packed – assembles with a drill and screwdriver, typically 30–45 minutes with two people

How it’s built

Every corner is supported by a 2" x 2" post; the 6" x 1" boards screw directly to it. The liner fits inside the finished bed.

Sizes, growing area & compost needed

External size is the footprint of the bed. The internal growing area is roughly 5cm smaller in each direction (the thickness of the boards). Compost figures assume filling the bed close to the top – a useful shopping guide, not an exact science.

† Sides 6ft and longer are supplied as two boards per course, joined with the joiner board shown in the diagram above. All kits use 6" x 1" planks and 2" x 2" corner posts; maximum single plank length is 4ft.

Assembly

Prepare or rotavate the ground and make sure it is flat – the bed sits about 1" (3cm) down into the earth. Assemble with a second person if possible, using a power drill and cordless screwdriver (not included): join the panels vertically, attach joining pieces on long sides, join the corners using the corner posts, fit the liner, then push the planter down onto the soil.
